Branscombe Beach

Where Tranquillity Meets History

Location: Nestled along the stunning East Devon coast, Branscombe is a picturesque village that feels like a secret whispered by the sea. Thatched cottages, winding lanes, and lush valleys—this place is a tranquil retreat into nature. And right at its heart lays Branscombe Beach, a long shingle beach that invites you to kick off your shoes and let the waves kiss your toes.

Scenic Beauty: Branscombe Beach stretches below the beautiful village of Branscombe itself. Imagine rugged cliffs, dramatic rock formations, and the soothing rhythm of the waves. The beach extends eastward for about a mile, eventually meeting Beer Head—a perfect spot for coastal walks and breathtaking views.

Facilities:

Parking: Fear not, beachgoers! There’s a convenient car park near the beach entrance1. No need to lug your picnic basket too far!

Café: Fancy a cuppa or an ice cream? The beach café has you covered. Because nothing says “seaside bliss” like sipping a latte with sand between your toes.

Toilets: Yes, they’ve got those too. Because even paradise-goers need a loo break!

Local Town Vibes: Branscombe village is part of the Jurassic Coastline—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s like stepping into a time capsule. Here’s a glimpse of what awaits:

Manor Mill: Wander over to the restored 16th-century watermill. It’s not just for show; it’s in full working order! Imagine the rhythmic creak of the wheel as it grinds grain.

Forge and Lace: Explore the village forge, where blacksmiths once shaped metal into tools and horseshoes. And speaking of craftsmanship, Branscombe was famous for its handmade lace—a delicate art passed down through generations.

Smuggler’s Secrets: Back in the 1800s, Branscombe was a hotspot for smuggling. Jack Rattenbury, the legendary smuggler, roamed these shores. Tunnels were discovered in the fields—rumoured hiding spots for contraband goods like brandy, tea, and silk. The dragoons tried to catch the smugglers, but Jack was wily and lucky. His motto? “No one, however, offered to advance.”

🌟 Fun Fact: The Weston Plats, between Branscombe and Sidmouth, were clifftop plots where locals farmed early crops of flowers, veggies, and strawberries. Those Branscombe potatoes? They gave Jersey spuds a run for their money!

So, my fellow beachcombers, whether you’re seeking history, salty air, or just a sandy spot to unwind, Branscombe Beach awaits
